Utpal Jha is a great signature of Maithili Theatre. Basically from Saharsa,
Utpal jee is equally versed in acting, direction and writing. With education
received in Bihar Utpal jee was desirous of doing theatre and music along with
writing and hence he dreamt of having the training in dramatics. He first
joined Bhartendu Drama Academy, Lucknow and had the two years full time
training in dramatic arts . In 2001 he passed out from there and arrived Delhi,
the centre of all theatre activities, and started working with renowned theatre
and film directors. During this course of time, it occurred to him that he
should also have specialization in design and direction. Consequently he joined
National School of Drama, Delhi in 2002. After passing this school in 2005 he
has been doing theatre regularly and at the same time he is connected with
media also.
Utpal jee has directed more than 35 plays in different languages. Of these
dramas, important ones are “The Zoo Story”,’Macbeth’,” Mid Summer Night’s Dream”,
“Panch Patra”, “Paul Gomra Ka Scooter”. Moreover, he has been working as a
technical director for many international / national theatre and contemporary dance festivals. He has been working as design and acting instructor in many
drama schools and film institutes like NSD, New Delhi, BNA, Lucknow, HRFTR,
Mandi, NSD, Sikkim, SRC, New Delhi etc.
Utpal Jha is an emerging actor as well and has done some serials, short films; add films
and corporate films as an actor and director. His acting in the first Maithili
serial “Nain Na Tirpit Bhel” is subject to widespread appreciation.
In 2012 he
has been conferred with Mithila Vibhooti award for his immense contribution to
the development of Maithili Theatre. At present he is connected with different
govt. institutes, NGO's, film companies and organisations and working as
designer, director, film maker, event designer, theatre instructer.
